The hammam and peshtemal cotton towels
There are places in our life that are capable of acting as therapy for us more than we can imagine; one of these is the hammam. Those who have been lucky enough to be able to do so know what I mean: the hammam is not only an environment dedicated to the care of one's body but also of the mind, it is a place where time stops, worries disappear, everything is accompanied by slow movements and muffled sounds.
The first thing that strikes you about ancient hammams is their architecture:
the large space that opens once you enter the entrance usually has a marble fountain surrounded by small changing rooms with wooden doors.
Here the women custodians of the business generally lounge in the company of tea and welcome customers by giving them a few, essential directions for the bathroom and delivering thepeshtemal, the towels strictly in thin cotton.
Some variations of the peshtemal towel also used in hammams but now also at home and at the sea.
This is where the journey into the world of the hammam begins.
After leaving everything in the locker room and wearing towelspeshtemal you cross a small intermediate room that prepares the body for the sudden change in temperature that is inside the great room.
A large and heavy wooden door takes us into the huge environment clouded by clouds of steam; the niches surrounding the walls become small shelters where, by pouring hot and cold water with the metal bowl, the body begins to relax and the muscles to relax.
From this moment on we forget everything that is outside: the noises of the city, the bad thoughts, the frenzy of everyday life. The only lights are the colored rays of light that filter through the holes in the dome and the only sound is that of the drops of water falling into the fountains.
When the pores of the skin are well opened, then one indulges in the energetic hands of the masseuses who on the marble hexagon with their glove soaked in Marseille soap, remove all traces of dead skin and worry.
The bathroom in the hammam does not have a time. It is the body that decides when to leave: when it feels satisfied, or too tired from being too hot.
When getting dressed and handing over towels, the movements are slow and delicate; fortunately, the magic of the hammam does not vanish immediately: for a few more hours we carry the serenity of mind and body that this wonderful environment has given us.
THE CHARACTERIZING ELEMENT OF THE HAMMAM: THE PESHTEMAL
Thepeshtemalit is one of the elements that still characterizes the hammam environment thanks to its lightness and absorbency, at the same time. It is a fabric born with a very essential design, with a checkered pattern where red prevailed, but over the years it has taken on an increasingly sophisticated style and even today, in its variants, it remains not only the icon of the hammam but to be part of our moments of well-being at home.
